BVP COPPER veterinary supplement for treatment of copper deficiency in cattle and sheep let’s know more about the product
Composition
BVP COPPER injection contain :
Active Ingredients:
Copper 20 mg/ml as copper methionate.
Preservative:
Chlorocresol 1 mg/ml.
Pharmaceutical Form:
BVP COPPER injection is suspension for Injection
Therapeutic Indications:
BVP COPPER injection is recommended for the prevention and treatment of copper deficiency
in cattle and sheep. BVP COPPER injection will provide a prolonged rise in the copper status in animals. The duration of the effect of a single treatment will depend on the initial copper status of the animal and the conditions on the farm.
Elevated pasture molybdenum levels, for instance, will necessitate more frequent dosage. In most circumstances a dose will be effective for 2 to 4 months.
In the prevention of swayback – treatment of the pregnant ewe about mid-term is recommended.
Usually the treatment of calves and lambs under six weeks of age is not recommended, but in outbreaks of swayback this treatment (as a preventative) for younger lambs may be recommended at the discretion of a Veterinary Surgeon.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
BVP COPPER injection administered by deep intramuscular injection only into the neck area.
The dosage and frequency of therapy required depends upon the clinical condition and copper status of the animal as assessed by blood and liver levels both before and after therapy and after consultation with a Veterinary Surgeon. This is particularly relevant to sheep as they are sensitive to copper toxicity. The copper status on farms may change from year to year; it is therefore recommended that random samples of serum are periodically checked to see if the deficiency still exists.
The suggested dose rate is 20 mg copper per 50 kg live weight – maximum 120 mg copper.
The following is given as a guide to dosage:
Lambs – 0.5ml;
Ewes – 2 ml;
Calves – 1 – 2 ml;
Cows – 4 – 6 ml.
Contraindications
Do not administer BVP COPPER injection intravenously. Do not overdose as there is no specific antidote.
Do not inject into the rump muscles.
As with other forms of copper supplementation, the use of parenteral injections can sometimes give rise to toxic reactions as well as allergic type responses with respiratory distress and these should be treated symptomatically.
A small nodule may occur at the site of injection in cattle but will be transient and disappear in less than one month.
The likelihood of this happening can be reduced by the use of the proper injection technique.
It is generally advised to avoid injection on wet days as this can increase the likelihood of contamination.
Avoid the introduction of contamination during use.
Do not use it simultaneously with other preparations.
Should any apparent growth or discolouration occur, the product should be discarded.
Withdrawal Period:
Meat – A period of 21 days should be allowed from injection to slaughter to allow for complete dispersion of the product from the site of injection.
